Pilots may like to check this information before visiting
Please study the AIP Vol. 4 plate. That is the "official word" and nothing on this web site overrides CAA's publications.
Please also check the NOTAMs before visiting. They may contain urgent, safety-critical information. |

The airfield is normally available for use without prior approval. But please be aware that it is a condition of your access to this private property that you pay the $10 daily landing fee. There is an honesty box on the northern end of the hangar.
If you don't have cash with you to pay the fee, you can use internet banking to pay into our bank: 38-9017-0013554-01 (with rego and date please)
Sorry, no cheques, our bank won't accept them.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy your visit :
- All parking is on the West side of the runway. No parking near the houses or on the starter extension.
- If the wind favours 31 (which it often seems to do) you may find that flying your final approach over Athenree can leave you rather high for a quality landing.
Most pilots prefer to fly a curved final approach alongside the ridge and tree line of Athenree Heights, the hills to the South-East of the airfield, before turning onto final. - The windsock at the threshold of 13 is less affected by turbulence from obstructions than the one by the hangar.
- The airfield is low-lying and parts will become soft after heavy rain. The runway crown will be firmer than the edges. In winter we may from time to time either completely close the airfield, or restrict it to microlights or even helicopters - this is for your safety. Please check the NOTAMs before arriving.
- We have a continuing battle with rabbits. They tend to dig holes on the western side of the runway. We fill the holes when we find them, but please keep an eye out for fresh holes. And please let us know where one has appeared.
- NORDO microlights operate here.
- And a reminder that the circuit is on the land-ward side away from the beach. Please don't fly low over the houses and annoy the neighbours. That's a tried and trusted way of getting airfields closed.
Waihi Beach airfield is a private airfield operated by Waihi Beach Flyers, a group of local flyers aiming to keep the airfield operational for all visiting pilots to enjoy. We rely on landing fees to pay the costs - windsocks, mowing, maintenance, council rates, and more.
